ébastien Hugue is both an electric and an upright bass player. Born in France in 1996, he started to play the bass at the age of thirteen.
He first practiced rock n’ roll music in Dijon, his hometown in France where he met Michel Thévenard in 2011. Michel is a bass teacher that taught him an excellent technique to play the electric bass. Within this program of three years, he discovered Jaco Pastorius, Mark King, Richard Bona, Cliff Burton (first bass player of Metallica) and his taste was of course mainly orientated into rock and metal music.
In the meantime in high-school, he started a rock/fusion jazz band called Muphin. During this period he played in a brass band called Ze Tribu Brass Band that was managed by Zutique Production in Dijon. Their first and unique album came out on 1st October 2017.
In 2014, he started to study at the university and learned the double-bass at the « Conservatoire Régional de Dijon ». After being quite disappointed with the university and the lessons that he had in Dijon at the conservatory, he decided to move to Chalon-sur-saône.
It is in Chalon-sur-saône that he started to practice double-bass seriously and followed the lessons of Michel Martin-Charrières that introduced him to the New York modern jazz scene. They listened together to a lot of great jazz artists such as Gilad Hekselman, Reuben Rogers, Robert Hurst, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Thomas Morgan, Marc Johnson, George Garzone and of course Branford and Wynton Marsalis. But the list is non-exhaustive…
Sébastien continued to go back to Dijon to rehearse with Muphin and they released an EP in 2015. During his studies in Chalon between 2015 and 2019, he played with his trio Jazz by three alongside with Victor Prost on drums and Tom Juvigny on the electric guitar. They played in weddings, concerts and other events around Burgundy and the Great East of France.
He also played with All you need is swing, a swing band specialized in dance music from the 1930’s.
In April 2016, the band Muphin has split up and he started a collaboration with Filansen, a french singer from Burgundy with whom he recorded an album called « Issue de Secours » released in June 2017 and toured in the summer.
In 2017 after the tour, he decided to take a more jazz-orientated turn and stopped to be a sideman with Filansen. He created his own quintet SH Group with whom he toured in April 2019 in Burgundy and recorded his first EP in June 2019 called “SH Group” and released it on 12th of March 2020.
Sébastien entered the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel in September 2019, after graduating with a « Diplôme d’Etudes Musicales » in Chalon-sur-saône. He moved to live in Belgium and to continue studying.
He started to play with Thomas Sagne trio and other bands like Qelder as well as a rock band called La Poudre. Rob Swennen, a friend from conservatory decided to create EVIGS during the Covid crisis in which the bassist was involved. EVIGS was an amplified jazz ensemble that was both influenced by hip-hop, jazz and rock.
In 2023, Sébastien graduate with honors at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel after three years of bachelor.
During the academic year 2023 – 2024 he stayed in Cologne, Germany during an Erasmus exchange program. He studied upright bass with Dietmar Fuhr, Robert Landfermann and Sebastian Gramms. In April 2024, he recorded a second album with SH Group called “Playing for Change” and released it on 20th of February 2026.
From October 2024 until January 2025, he worked on Jewel of the Seas (Royal Caribbean International) for his first cruise ship contract. He performed every night for guests on a variety of repertoires such as production shows, tango shows, jazz and funk sets as well as vocal cabaret sets and performed for several guest entertainers onboard the Jewel.
After his comeback, he worked for Jeunesses Musicales in Brussels, presenting the upright bass in primary schools and introducing children to this giant instrument. Sébastien started collaborating with Thibaud Fournales around the pianist’s own compositions.
From October 2025 to June 2026, he finished his studies and graduated with a master in Jazz double bass at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (with honors).
During this period of time, he released Playing for Change, played and recorded for the Brussels Jazz Vanguard competition. He performed several concerts with SH Group promoting the release of their new album during several release parties and his Master final exam.
Sébastien taught bass guitar in the music conservatory of Mons-en-Baroeul, Lille metropolitan area in France from September 2025 to October 2026.
